The Yorkshire Agricultural Society Veg Box competition, in partnership with Grow to School, celebrated a record-breaking year at the Great Yorkshire Show last week.
The competition received the maximum capacity of 30 entries, plus a waiting list already lined up for 2027. The enthusiasm was incredible! This year a brand‑new category was trialled for specialist schools, welcoming St John’s Catholic Specialist School in Clifford, North Leeds. Their fantastic Veg Box earned them a spot in the final at the show. Finalists attended the show to showcase their boxes in the brand new school garden.

Best Diary – Farsley Springbank Primary School, Leeds
Highly Commended – Hipperholme Grammar School, Halifax
Highly Commended – New Road Primary School, Sowerby Bridge
6th – Monk Fryston Primary School, Leeds
5th – Hawsker cum Stainsacre Primary School
4th – Sharow CE Primary School, Ripon
3rd – Willow Primary School, Doncaster
2nd – Girlington Primary School, Bradford
1st – Chapel Haddlesey Primary School, Selby
The judges, Suzie Orger and Tom Wiltshire from RHS Garden Harlow Carr, had the tough job deciding the winners and both commented on how brilliantly the schools had done. They loved hearing how many children are now growing their own produce at home too.
