Case Study: Grow in Residence

Title:

Staff Continuing Professional Development

School:

St Aidan’s CE (VA) First School

Grounds:

Small playing field, tarmac area, MUGA, two growing spaces one enclosed with a pond and nature space and a formal sensory garden with storytelling area

Issue:

With a tight budget, but a big aspiration to get staff skilled up to take learning outdoors, St Aidan’s have worked closely with Grow to School to develop a programme of delivery that would give the children access to meaningful and curriculum linked sessions and give the teachers confidence and inspiration to go it alone.

Solution:

The solution was to work closely with the teachers to structure our work around their planning and for us to deliver bi-weekly sessions in school and leave staff with simplified independent outdoor learning sessions to deliver alone.

Impact:

This model of Grow led and independent delivery has been a great success with staff gaining confidence through working alongside Grow practitioners whilst getting the opportunity to deliver sessions alone on the weeks we are not in school. They are also becoming inspired to interpret their curriculum for delivery outdoors by seeing how the sessions written for them are drawn out of the planning.
Grow’s sessions have been an extremely valuable opportunity for both the children and staff. As a teacher, they have helped my confidence in planning outdoor activities. I will definitely use the outdoor environment much more
